The genus Raorchestes (formerly Philautus) waserected by Biju et al., (2010) based on molecularphylogenetic studies. This genus is restricted toWestern Ghats with 30 species (Map 1 and 2) tillthe year 2010. Members of this genus are knownfor direct development (Patil and Kanamadi, 1997;Krishnamurthy et al., 2002; Biju, 2003; Gururajaand Ramachandra, 2006; Biju et al., 2010).Taxonomy and systematics of Raorchestes wasrecently revised by Bossuyt and Dubois (2001). Bijuand Bossuyt (2009) and Biju et al., (2010) clearedmost of the uncertainties in the identification anddistribution of these frogs. The Western Ghats, abiodiversity hot spot is still awaiting many newspecies of amphibians for description. In the present study, nine species of Raorchestes, new to science, are described.Materials and methods:Field surveys were conducted both in active andnon active period (pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon) of amphibians in the Western Ghats.Animals were located by their calls. Body colourand call patterns were noted in the field. Specimens.
